In “Thor 4” or “Star Wars”? Jeff Goldblum hints at secret role
After their success with “Thor 3”, Taika Waititi and Jeff Goldblum could soon do something together again. So is Goldblum returning as the Marvel villain grandmaster, is he in Waititi’s “Star Wars” film – or is he even going to be a vampire (again)?
Cult star Jeff Goldblum and director Taika Waititi got to know and appreciate each other while working together on “Thor 3: Decision Day”. The two eccentric filmmakers have since repeatedly expressed their mutual admiration. So it’s no wonder that they want to work together again.
A new interview with the “Jurassic Park” star now suggests this. Compared to the website Insider Goldblum evaded the question of whether he would like to appear in the “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian” (on which Waititi works), but instead stated that he and Waititi might soon be together again could do:
Goldblum avoided the question of whether he would like to appear in the “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian” (on which Waititi worked), but instead stated that he and Waititi might soon be able to do something together again:
“We talked about something else that has to be kept secret at the moment, but I would do anything with him,” said Goldblum.
That sounds very vague and anything but wrapped up, but there actually seem to be talks about a renewed collaboration, which is currently in the pipeline in view of the exciting projects that Oscar winner Waititi (for the script of “Jojo Rabbit”) is currently doing invites speculation about different scenarios …
Speculations about different scenarios
1. Jeff Goldblum in “Thor 4: Love And Thunder”
The most obvious thing for us actually seems to be that Jeff Goldblum, after his MCU debut in “Thor 3” in Waititi’s sequel “Thor 4: Love And Thunder” (theatrical release currently planned for February 10, 2022) as Grandmaster, the eccentric ruler of the garbage planet Sakaar, come back. For the villain, who is popular with many fans, things didn’t look so rosy at the end of the predecessor, but he survived.
In fact, reports have even made the rounds that Goldblum has already confirmed its comeback. As it turned out, the announcement did not come from Goldblum itself, but from a fake Twitter account – which does not have to mean that the information is incorrect.
In any case, Goldblum will take up his grandmaster role as a speaker in the upcoming Marvel animation series “What If …?”
2. Jeff Goldblum in “Star Wars”
In May 2020, Lucasfilm officially announced that Taika Waititi was working on a new “Star Wars” film together with “1917” author Krysty Wilson-Cairns – and in a galaxy far, far away, a role that was tailor-made for Goldblum could certainly be found that we are currently not allowed to talk about.
The film, about which no further details are known so far, is still in a very early stage of development and should not be released until 2023 at the earliest.
3. Jeff Goldblum in the “Flash Gordon” remake
In addition to his work for Marvel and “Star Wars”, Taika Waititi is currently working on the script for a new edition of the cult sci-fi adventure “Flash Gordon” – and Jeff Goldblum would undoubtedly fit into this universe as well.
Since the remake will be an animated film, it would only be a speaking role. But thanks to “What If …?” Goldblum would at least have had fresh experiences.
4. Jeff Goldblum in the “Time Bandits” series
Another remake in which Waititi has a finger in the game is a series remake of Terry Gilliam’s time travel adventure “Time Bandits”.
Even if the project has been very quiet recently and the other projects are likely to have higher priority at Waititi, it cannot be ruled out that Goldblum could stop by here too.
5. Jeff Goldblum as Dracula in “What We Do In The Shadows”
But what we like best is the possibility of Jeff Goldblum appearing in the Taika Waititis and Jemaine Clement’s vampire comedy “5 Zimmer, Küche, Sarg” based mockumentary series “What We Do In The Shadows”, which Waititi herself also used Writer, director and producer is involved. This has given us delicious guest appearances in the past by all kinds of stars who have previously embodied bloodsuckers (including Wesley Snipes and Tilda Swinton).
We already had a perfect role in mind for Goldblum in the series – and none other than the vampire prince Dracula himself. Goldblum played that wonderfully stupid role in the forgotten “goosebumps” video game “Escape from Horrorland” from 1996:
6. Jeff Goldblum in … something completely different
Of course, it is also possible that Goldblum and Waititi have something completely different in mind that has not yet been revealed. Goldblum’s secrecy, however, certainly points to an already well-known larger brand.
But it is at least very likely that the project – like all of the options mentioned – will come about at Disney. Maybe even directly for the streaming service Disney, on which “The Mandalorian” and the reality series “The World According To Jeff Goldblum” are already running and for which Goldblum only had words of praise when talking to Insider.
And who knows: in the end, several of the options listed above may even be correct. Aside from all the speculation, we are sure that with “Thor 3” and “What If …?” We will not have seen the last joint projects by Taika Waititi and Jeff Goldblum.
